The need for new independent Directors is, in part, because of the increased attention being directed at corporate governance issues.

As many Board Directors will vouch, an accomplished Non-Executive Director (NED) who understands the sector can make a significant difference to the success of a company: fresh talent brings fresh ideas and new perspectives, as well as additional skills.

Any start-up is only as good as its management team, and it is very difficult for any biotech start-up to get a fully balanced and functioning team from the outset. A good NED can provide that vital balancing ingredient. It may be clear that the team needs a particular form of input such as medical or commercial expertise; or it may be that the team needs a new network of contacts and business leads; or perhaps they just need the benefit of a "been there done that" mentor to help steer them through the start-up process. A good NED will bring at least one of these benefits to the Board table and if possible an element of all three.
